The Local Area

Westward Ho!

Westward Ho! is famous for its 2.5km sandy ‘Blue Flag’ beach which is backed by a pebble ridge and the Northam Burrows (including the Royal North Devon Golf Club, the oldest course in England). The beach is an ideal surfing and water sports area as its location in Bideford Bay means it has a very gradual ‘shelf’, perfect for kids and adults alike, and is also lifeguarded during the main season.

Built in to the rocks at the village end of the beach there is the ‘rock pool’, a man made but naturally filled (with sea water) swimming pool, a great place to sun bathe in the warm summer months and given its shallow depth its perfect for younger children.

The village also features many gift and surf shops as well as some lovely bars and restaurants. And look out for the well-known poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling (Westward Ho’s! most famous former resident) which is built in to the promenade.

Clovelly

Possibly the most famous village in Devon, the picturesque village of Clovelly, built into the side of a 400 foot cliff, lies just over 10 miles west of Westward Ho! on the side of Bideford Bay (on a clear day it can be seen from the beach). This beautiful little fishing village with its 14th century harbour is a sight to behold with its cobbled (vehicle free) streets that are serviced by donkeys and sleds.

If you’re in the area then Clovelly is a must see.

Appledore

At the far (Sandymere) end of Westward Ho! beach is where the rivers Taw and Torridge meet the sea, the rivers themselves meet just a little further upstream where the villages of Appledore and Instow sit on either bank. Appledore is again a picturesque little village with a high quay above the river (great for jumping off or crabbing from!) Appledore is famous for both its fishing and ship building industries which date back hundreds of years.

A great little place to visit with some lovely restaurants dotted along the quayside.
